Iris

Borers have all but killed my two bearded irises and I just haven't had the nerve to spray them with the heavy duty stuff. But out at the park there's this beautiful, fragrant, old-fashioned iris that seems to survive all on it's own. I'm so tempted to dig up a small piece...

Borers must be a more common problem out east than they are around here.

That being said, there's a special place in my heart for old fashioned varieties of many plants - they've proved their garden worthiness, usually for generations. The beautiful color of old fasioned iris is one of the best examples of that I know.

Maybe a gardener in an older section of town would be willing to share some of those old iris with you.
